Welding is a process that joins materials, usually metals or thermoplastics, by causing coalescence. Generally, this is done by melting the workpieces and adding a filler material in rod or wire to form a pool of molten material (the weld pool) that cools to become a strong joint. Alternatively, the deposited filler material can have a chemistry that is harder than the workpiece and "hardfacing" can protect the workpiece.
